‘Shital Pati’ is Recognition as UNESCO Cultural Heritage

Shital Pati is a traditional art of the Sylhet region. It has been inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Humanity by UNESCO, reported by UNB. 


The recognition was given on Wednesday at a UNESCO ICH committee meeting in South Korea.


Shital Pati is the 3rd UNESCO Cultural Heritage of Bangladesh. The previous two are Mangal Shobhajatra on Pahela Baishakh and Baul songs.

The mat of Shital Pati is used by people all over Bangladesh as a sitting mat, bedspread, or prayer mat.


Sitalpati, also called Sital Pati and Sittal Pati, is one kind of mat that gives you cold feelings from nature in the summer season. Basically, Sital Pati is made from Murtal plants and is most used in Bangladesh and some areas of India and Sri Lanka. It’s also called Nakshi Pati.
